Last September 2010, the Utah Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at Snow College received a Rural Business Enterprise Grant from the USDA Rural Development in support of the Rural Business Outreach Program in central Utah’s six county areas. A portion of the grant funds supported this donation of business related materials for libraries. This effort is strongly supported by the Wayne County Economic Development Office. Twelve libraries in central Utah received book donations; the total cost of these books is $9,964. We want to express our appreciation for this wonderful donation to our library! THANK YOU!

We fly home... a successful trip to Reading Land

July 12th was our final story hour for this summer. Captain Jackson was our pilot for the flight home from “reading land” where we visited fun and interesting places. Shortly after take-off, the captain gave the ok to remove the seatbelts and we were free to move around the cabin. …and MOVE we DID! To the great rockin’ beat of “Where in the World am I?” the kids threw the blow up world globe around. When the music stopped, the child left holding the globe was asked a question about a book, a place they’ve been in a book and other library related questions. We separated into four groups with on-flight entertainment and crafts. In one station, Chaley & Lauren helped the children with a “book buddy” craft (bookmark). They were given craft supplies and were told to create something from one of the places we visited in our summer reading program. This was their souvenir from their trip. The next station was handled by Jessica and Kiera; those fabulous stewardesses gave them an on-flight snack. While they ate their snacks, the children were told about books on CD and they listened to a little bit of the wonderful book “The Tale of Despereaux”. The next stop was under a tree where the kids listened to Faun read them two wonderful children’s books “Princess Hyacinth, the Surprising Tale of a Girl who Floated” by Florence Parry Heide and “The Boss Baby” by Marla Frazee. The last station was probably the favorite for all the children… this is where they got to pick out a new book to take home! Ellen and Charlotte assisted the children in finding the perfect book on their reading level. When one child was given a book, he looked up at Ellen and asked, “We get to keep it?” She replied, “Yes!” “FOREVER?” he asked… “Yes, forever!” Ellen replied. These are the moments that make it all worth it. To see a child get excited to have his very own book, to learn to cherish books and reading is the reward… It is our hope that the children grow up loving experiences they have going to the library, become life-long library lovers and readers. This was a great ending to a wonderful summer reading program. But, it really isn’t over yet! Keep the kids reading and come to the library for prizes!

Reading takes you places… We are hoping that the children are reading about far away places this summer! Tuesday, July 5th took us to Hawaii at story hour. Janalee Barlow and Joni Taft told the kids how the islands were formed from volcanoes, how the first people came to be there, about the food and culture. Nena Warner then taught the kids a Maori dance, some hula and a wonderful Samoan song while she played the ukelele! We played some water balloon games and had tropical fruit otter pops! We ALL want to take a REAL trip to Hawaii!
Next Tuesday, July 12th, we will fly home after our many great adventures. The on-flight entertainment will be a lot of fun and we are planning to make some souvenirs’ from a country they visited!

Our summer reading program is taking our kids to amazing places… On Tuesday, June 28th, our destination was Africa! Ted Winder took the kids on an African Safari; he read a book about the mighty and wonderful Animals that live on that continent and told the kids some very interesting things. Taylor Jones came with some items he had picked up in Africa and shared his experiences of living ithere for two years. Ted took the kids on a “Lion Hunt”, we played animal charades, and pass the musical globe to the music “The Lion Sleeps Tonight”. If the globe ended up in your hands, you had the opportunity to answer a question about Africa or about what they’ve been reading for a prize! Ellen Anderson read a great book titled “Way Far Away on a Wild Safari” by Jan Peck; illustrated by Valeria Petrone. The children went away with a better understanding of Africa and a cup of animal crackers! Thank you to so many wonderful people that continue to step forward and help with our summer reading program. You help make it the success that it is... Ted Winder, Taylor Jones, Ellen Anderson, Charlotte Williams, Lauren & Kiera!

Our trip to Mexico!

It turned out to be a beautiful day to go to Mexico (in our imagination)! We started out with Steven Gomez Perez telling us stories about Mexico, traditions, and teaching the kids a few words in Spanish. Then we were entertained by the cutest little dancers! OH MY, I personally LOVED IT! We then separated into groups. Maria Ellett made some AMAZING Mexican treats and while the kids ate them, she read them a book in Spanish! She is such a wonderful person... more on that later. Another station had her equally sweet husband, Steven Ellett, who did a great job with 4 groups and 4 Piñata's without one accident! I consider that a huge success! Then there was Virginia, keeping the kids entertained with Mexican BINGO! The kids learned some more words in Spanish... The last station was with Steven Gomez Perez, where he and Chaley taught the kids how to dance. That was the cutest thing!

I want to thank our wonderful volunteers... Steven and Maria Ellett who went over and above gathering kids up to dance, making treats for 200 and more. The best. Steven Gomez-Perez and his entire family for bringing decorations, posters, flags, clothes and more... they were great! Also thanks to Raylynne from Serenity Springs, Lluvia, Virgina, all the dancers, Charlotte, Ellen, and Chaley. We have great people here and I am so thankful to you all.

Our visit to China!

Janece Tolbert spent three years in China teaching... While there, she acquired some great items, learned some wonderful things about the culture and had many great adventures. Janece showed the kids what types of hats they wear in China and had a few kids come up to model them. She brought chopsticks and had the children try and pick up food items. I think they were relieved that they can use spoons and forks on a daily basis instead! The children, as well as the adults enjoyed her tremendous presentation. Paula Pace, Janece's side-kick for many years, was her assistant and made a very good Vanna White! Taylor Tolbert performed some awesome karate and then taught the kids a few moves! Some of the kids dressed up and oh how we loved that! We made a Chinese Dragon and went on a parade! Thank you so much for coming, Janece & Paula... you are the BEST!

Flight 2011 to "Reading Land"

The summer reading program, “One World, Many Stories” started with a bang on Tuesday, June 7^th with over 150 people in attendance. The kids boarded Flight 2011 to READING LAND! Captain Jim Lamb was the pilot for our flight, with Co-Captain Ethan. Our on flight entertainment consisted of learning to say “HELLO” in many different languages, reading some great books, and doing the “Continental Jump” which, quite possibly, could have brought our flight down! We very enthusiastically jumped every continent! Our fabulous flight attendants took the passenger's boarding passes, demonstrated the safety devises, sang the "hello in different languages" song with the passengers and passed snacks through the cabin to our passengers. Each child was given a great bag of goodies... a reading passport, a summer reading button, a summer reading bookmark, a summer reading calendar, a pattern for a Chinese lantern (which we are hoping they will make and bring to our next flight destination!), and a boarding pass. Thank you to some awesome volunteers… Jim Lamb, Ellen Anderson, Charlotte Williams, Kieara Taylor, Jessica Hamilton and Lauren Jackson!

Next week, Janece Tolbert, will take us to our flight destination of CHINA. Kids, pack your suitcases and come dressed to travel to China on Tuesday, June 14th at 1:00 p.m. You won’t want to miss this…

What a way to end this year's awesome summer reading program!

Mike Hamilton presented "The Magic of Reading"!

Utah's 2009 Best of State Specialty Act winner and educational presenter, Mike Hamilton, brought an exciting and motivational message of the importance of reading. With floating tables, a bowling ball falling out of drawing pads, doves, a never ending vase of water, and MUCH more... Mike had the crowd of over 240 people laughing and amazed! He topped the presentation off by bringing out a real baby kangaroo!!!
We feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to have him come to the Tri-County Bookmobile Library. A big thanks goes out to the Utah State Library for making it happen! It was a fitting end to a wonderful summer reading program.

Well, we did have some fun making bubbles with a bubble recipe at our story time July 6th. Our chefs whipped some bubbles while our bubble recipe song played. We celebrated friendship as our volunteers, Kiera Taylor and Lauren Jackson sang the SpongBob Squarepants "FUN Friendship Song"...

"Mike the Magician" will be coming for our end-of-summer-reading program! This will be an event filled with the Magic of Learning! Mike Hamilton, winner of the "2009 Best of State Specialty Act" will inspire kids as he teaches through magic... healthy choices and a well-rounded education are no illusion! Pirates vs. Mermaids

The Sea... the Sea... we went to the sea! The kids sang and clapped along with a fun sea song! We read a pirate book, danced to a pirate song, heard a song about a mermaid, heard mermaid jokes and learned how to speak like a pirate... It was a blast! The crowning moment of this story time, however, was the mermaid vs. pirates tug-o-war! Even with King Titan, the mermaids struggled against the pirates. It all turned out great and the kids ate some Popsicles! (Thanks to Royals Market & Joe!)

Shark Week! ...Eeeek!

When the children entered last Tuesday, the door to the auditorium had this photo...
with a sign that read:
"Enter at your own risk!"

Well, we have some brave kids here in Wayne County because over 130 kids came through those doors!
The kids learned some VERY interesting things about sharks from a book called, "Surprising Sharks" by Ruth Galloway. We sang a fish song and watched as one by one, five fish were eaten by a big fat fish and then the big fat fish was eaten by a SHARK! The kids had so much fun, we had to do it again!!!
Our helpers were: Camron Chappell, Rhett Taylor, Amber Blackburn, Tatianna Petty and Lauren Jackson.
Later on, they performed a skit comparible to "Little Red Riding Hood" only it was the little red Parot Fish and the wolf was in fact, a SHARK! It was a lot of fun to watch! The kids went home with SHARK fruit snacks... donated by Royals Foodtown Market. Thank you for always supporting this program, Joe!

Next week Don Bone, from the fish hatchery, will join us for story hour!

Smokey the Bear came for a visit!

Our second story hour was a big success, thanks to the many helpers... Tasha, Kaitlyn, and Tasha helped with the H2O- GO! GO! theme song and then later on led the kids in a PUDDLE DANCE! We read some fun books this week, "Scaredy Squirrel" and "Wilma the Frog in Space". The Forest Service sent Terry Holsclaw... he came with a great demonstration of a mountain, streams and lakes! Thanks, Terry, for all your extra effort... you were awesome! Then Smokey the Bear came for a visit. A good time was had by all!

The amount of support has been overwhelming! 123 kids came to this story hour! Thanks for coming!

H2O- GO! GO!

Mr. T makes science FUN!

Mr. T came with fun water experiments on the first story time, June 1st... He ended up spilling a lot of water, made the kids laugh and most importantly learn some fun facts about water. The kids all made their own water molecule out of marshmallows and Mr. T encouraged them to go home and do their own science experiments.
114 kids attended, which was an amazing highest record! We hope to have all these children reading throughout the summer.
NEXT week we will have Smokey the Bear visit, more good books and music and FUN!
The theme on the 13th is SHARKS! Books, skit, music, craft and FUN!
Fish, fish and FUN will be at story hour on the 22nd... along with Don Bone!
On the 29th, we're having MERMAIDS vs. PIRATES... a costume party! Who will win? It depends on you kids!

We're making plans for an exciting program! Story times that will include water science experiments, water games, fish fun, sharks, pirates, skits, prizes, (most important) lots of GREAT books and much more!

Sign your kids up at your local library in Bicknell or on the bookmobile near the end of May.
Story time events start on Tuesday, June 1st at 1:00 p.m. and go every Tuesday through July 13th!

We'll have guest visits from fish expert and very funny, awesome guy... Don Bone, awesome Mr. T (scientist extraordinaire!) and Smokey the Bear! We'll have some pirate fun, under the sea adventures, fun music and much more!

ALL GOOD THINGS MUST COME TO AN END!

July 21st, the Tri-County Bookmobile Library held their End-of-the-Summer-Reading-Program PARTY! Keeping with the theme “Be Creative…” there were booths set up to do just that. The booths were… “Be Creative with face painting” where Brooke Lamb, Chloe Garcia and Amber Ellett worked their creative magic on some darling faces! “Be Creative with Music” where the kids made some fun shaker instruments. “Be Creative with Crafts” where the kids made butterflies! “Be Creative with Thumb Art” where the kids turned their thumbprints into all kinds of fun characters! “Be Creative with a puppet show” where the kids played with puppets to make up their own show! “Be Creative with chalk art” where the kids worked their magic drawing some fun art! “Be Creative with Balloons” where the kids played water balloon volleyball… There were balloon animals all over, decorating the party; another creative thing to do with balloons! We had a bean bag toss, snow cones, popcorn, and treats… One of the highlights of the party was having our local DJ, Rhett Taylor, there to play some fun music and turn our party into something GREAT! The kids were rockin’ to the “Silly Dance” contest song, “Hands are for Clapping” and many more delightful songs! Many of the kids dressed up like a character from a book or something from one of our story time programs and received a FREE BOOK! A BIG thank you to our many wonderful helpers: Rhett Taylor (magnificent DJ), Lauren Jackson, Kiera Taylor, Stephen & Mary Ellett (for the great snow cones), Chloe Garcia, Cameron Chappell, Brooke Lamb, Haylee Jackson, Bethany Lamb, Torry Davis (for the great popcorn), Amber Ellett, Charlotte Williams (for all the help in the library), Carlie & Julie Chappell, Hannah Ellett and the parents that brought goodies! Dress up like a charactor of a favorite book, a dancer, an artist or anything creative and get a free book!

July 14th Story Time!

Music was the theme of the day... So, who better to teach us than the High School/Middle School Music teacher! Mr. Michael Reynolds has amazing talent... there isn't an instrument he cannot play, a song he cannot figure out on the piano (playing it by ear)!

We read a favorite (not as well known) Dr. Suess book titled "Pale Green Pants" and a counting book "We all went on a Safari" by Laurie Krebs. We played our bellies like a BONGO and other instruments to a delightful song! Kyle Taylor sang "Hello Muddah, Hello Faddah!" as Mr. Reynolds played and the book pages were turned. The illustrator brought so much humor in to the pictures! Mr. Reynolds played "The Conductor Says" (similar to Simon Says!) with the kids and below are the winners of the game.
Kyle Taylor and Margo Taylor then read and acted out "So, What's it like to be a Cat?" by Karla Kuskin. Kyle, the cat and Margo, the interviewer.

Lastly, we sang and played instruments to "Old MacDonald had a Farm". The kids all had a great time!

Patriotism and DANCE!

July 7th was a story time to celebrate our country and the different ways to be creative with dance. Susan Hamilton explained to the children the meanings of the different colors on our American flag, how we should all show respect, and how to fold the flag. Susan and her sister, Jessica, then performed the Stadium of Fire dances! The kids loved it! Susan read a book titled, "Color Dance" by Ann Jonas... many children were given different colors, different props to dance with, and as she read, they would wave their colors as she said the color. It was so much fun! The book "Dancing Matilda" by Sarah Hager was read... Karina, Chloe, Brooke and the kids all helped with the book. We had everyone bust a move to "Let's Shake"! (above photo shows some of the children on stage shakin' it!) After one more dance performance by Susan and Jessica, we headed outside where the children gathered around two BIG parachutes and boy did they make the parachutes dance! Then they all were cooled off with some otter pops... We had around 72 children in attendance! What a fun day to be creative with dance!

Acting is CREATIVE!

On Tuesday, June 30th, the theme for our program was acting. We were privileged to have some tremendous actors helping us out... Korina Petty, Cameron Chappell, Lauren Jackson, Rhett Taylor, Kiera Taylor and Cassey Manzanarez. They pantomimed emotions and we had the children guess what they were portraying. Elva read the book "Today I Feel Silly", a book about moods. We sang a great song called "Oh Hey! Oh Hi! Hello!" by Jim Gill. We divided up the group in three sections and all sang out as the song went along... we sang quiet like in a library, loud, mad, under water... you name it and we sang it! The kids loved it. Our actors gave us a show as the book "Falling for Rapunzel" was read. The auditorium was full of giggles as she threw down her underwear instead of her hair! The kids were delighted with this silly tale! At the end of our story time, we watched a movie that Kathy McCarthy made of the previous story hour... so all our kids became the STARS of the show. All went home with their own star and a treat. Thanks to all of our great actors, wonderful audience and everyone else that helped in any way. We appreciate your support!

Be Creative with ART!

On Tuesday, June 23rd, the Tri-County Bookmobile Library held the fourth story time. ART was the theme; the children learned to how to "Be Creative @ Your Library" by checking out art books, craft books and photography books. They learned about different mediums, what an illustrator is, and how to draw a couple of things.

There was a puppet show featuring everyone's favorite pig, "Olivia", which was written and illustrated by Ian Falconer. The children then put their artistic talents to work as they did some fabulous chalk art in the nearby tennis court! Eighty-five children were in attendence. Thank you again for all the support!

Rockin' the Library with MUSIC!

June 16th
As usual, we started out with our theme song “Be Creative @ Your Library” and some of the kids came up on stage to help us along! Luke and Maggie told a couple of jokes to see if the kids could guess what our story time was about… MUSIC!

“Ruby Sings the Blues” was a great little book about a girl who was very loud but learned to use her voice in a wonderful way as she learned to sing!

Michael Reynolds, our music teacher in Middle School and High School, brought instruments of all kinds to play a guessing game. Behind the curtain he and his helpers, Julia, Cameron, and Lauren, would play the different instruments and we would see if the kids could tell what it was. Mr. Reynolds has some very unique instruments that no one could guess! We all learned a lot!

We then got the rhythm with a little song called “Hands are for Clapping”! Everyone got into it and we were rocking the building!

Lastly, we had a little book called “She’ll be Comin’ Round the Mountain”… Two kids held the sign, 6 kids did the actions, 12 kids played instruments along with Cameron Chappell on his violin. Then ALL the children were given rhythm sticks and we all sang it one more time with a great beat!

We learned being creative with music was a LOT of FUN!

Ninety-three children were in attendance!

On June 9th, the Tri-County Bookmobile Library held the second story time. Being “creative @ our library”, we read books about dance, had a silly dance contest and was privileged to watch a ballet presented by Susan Hamilton. This was a dance that she not only performed, but also “created”! Cassey Manzanares and Cameron Chappell were on hand to bust some pretty incredible dance moves with the children. There was a total of 144 people in attendance, with 111 kids and 33 adults!

We had so many kids on stage, we couldn't see them all!

We read a book entitled "Frank was a Monster Who Wanted to Dance". Cameron Chappell was our "Monster" and boy could he dance... even without a brain, an eyeball, his arm and eventually his head! The children all love to see Cameron on stage.

Ronald McDonald Visits Our Library!

On Thursday, June 6th... to the delight of over a hundred children, Ronald McDonald visited our little Bookmobile Library in Bicknell. He brought smiles and laughs to everyone that attended the event! He told stories and performed magic tricks (with the help of Jackie, his assistant). Thanks to the efforts of the Utah State Library and McDonald's for coordinating his visit. It was something these kids won't soon forget!

Our First Story Time was a BLAST!

Well, what a great day! A new record for attendance... a whopping 118 kids came to our story time on June 2nd. It is great to have this tremendous support. We started it off by rocking the house with our new theme song, "Be Creative @ Your Library"!

We read some great books... "Those Darn Squirrels" and the highlight was "Goldilocks and the Three Bears". With Janell on piano and some fabulous actors, the story was read. Cassie Manzanares played "Goldilocks", Cameron Chappell as "Papa Bear", Shyann McCoy as "Mama Bear" and Lauren Jackson as "Baby Bear". The auditorium was quiet as the story came to life. These actors were very entertaining! The kids learned how music can play an important role in movies, cartoons and yes, even our little skit. The music Janell played, did indeed, help bring characters to life. A big thanks to our cast, Janell for playing the piano and Jamie for the treats! We couldn't do it without you all!

You're invited to BE CREATIVE @ YOUR LIBRARY

Children and teens can register anytime beginning Monday, June 1 by completing a registration form at the library or bookmobile.
Keep track of time spent reading, striving for 20 minutes each day.
Have a parent or guardian sign the Reading Log, bring it to the library or bookmobile, and get a prize!
Come to Story Time every TUESDAY @ 1:00
Starting June 2nd and ending July 21st!

Our kick-off will be June 2nd! We'll be getting the excitement going for the next 7 weeks! Don't forget that June 9th, you'll be attending a real ballet!

We are going to have a TON OF FUN this summer. We will be:

Creating art!

Getting our rhythm on!
Dancing!

Hamming it up on stage!
Creating music!

Just to name a few things...

We have special guests coming to share their expertise and entertain.

On June 9th, a ballerina will be performing on our stage! All little girls are encouraged to wear their tutu's if they want... We'll be taking photos of our Ballerina with the Little Ballerina's!

Of course, boys are encouraged to attend because we'll be doing other things as well.

Reading is a Family Affair!

The Summer Reading Program is a fun way to include reading and related activities into summer family time. It helps children maintain and improve reading skills.

During the summer months:

Read to young children daily.
Read a chapter book to your school-age children by reading aloud one or two chapters every day.
Encourage your children to spend time reading and looking at books.
Talk with your children about what they are reading.
Sign up for the Summer Reading Program and attend the story time programs each Tuesday at 1:00 p.m.
